Counter height bar stools are the shortest of the lot and are made to be used with bars that are the height of most kitchen counters. This height is typically thirty six inches from the floor. The seat height of counter stools is in the range of 24 to 28 inches.

Next are the bar stool height stools which are made to work with a bar that is slightly taller than counter height and measures around forty two inches from the floor. The seat height of these is around thirty inches.
And even taller size that is offered is known as the bistro or extra tall bar stool. These are quite popular for outdoor and patio use. These measure around four feet and the seat height of the extra tall variety is around thirty six inches.
The last height option is somewhat of a hybrid as it is the adjustable height bar stool. Depending on the style and the manufacturer, these bar stools can work with several different heights of bars. If you decide to purchase an stools for your bar that are adjustable in height, make sure that it will adjust to an acceptable height for the bar you will be using it with. Also be aware that adjustable height bar stools are somewhat more costly than similar bar stools that are not adjustable.
